Descrizione dettagliata lotto

This reference 6234 ‘Pre-Daytona’ is one of fewer than 150 examples of the model to be cased in gold, this figure is put into perspective when to compared to the approximately 2,300 pieces that were cased in stainless steel. The present watch, last seen at auction more than a decade ago, is a superlative example of this extremely rare reference. Cased in 14k gold, it was undoubtedly intended for the North American market. The condition is very impressive, the unrestored dial is stunning, the blue colour of the telemeter scale being particularly vibrant, the black tachymeter scale calibrated for miles and the word ‘Anti-Magnetic’ in English, and the nicely aged luminous dots are intact. The case is equally impressive, the back with sharp milling, the gold hallmark underneath the lower right lug is still visible. Moreover, it is accompanied by the guarantee, inscribed from a retailer in Portland (Oregon) and box, adding another further layer of attraction for the purist collector.

The Rolex Chronograph reference 6234 was produced for only about 6 years, from 1956 to 1961, when it was replaced by the reference 6238, the last pre-Daytona model before the introduction of the reference 6239 and the company's last traditional chronograph with polished bezel.

We are fortunate to be entrusted to offer this extremely rare and wonderfully preserved 14k gold reference 6234 for Christie’s 40th Anniversary auction, giving collectors the first chance in over 10 years to acquire this significant vintage Rolex gold chronograph.
