Urban Jürgensen was revived under the guidance of Peter Baumberger and in collaboration with the distinguished English watchmaker Derek Pratt, with a strong focus on technical perfection, classical beauty and artisan craftsmanship without compromise. The wristwatches manufactured during the 1980s and 1990s are a perfect example of how tradition and innovation can be combined and were a defining part in the rebirth of modern independent watchmaking.
Approximately 172 examples of reference 2 were produced in total, including pieces in yellow and pink gold, as well as 50 examples in platinum. Reference 2 introduced a new level of refinement, both mechanical and aesthetic, and would become the archetype for much of the manufacture’s future production. The model was the first to introduce a number of details that would later become synonymous with Urban Jürgensen’s identity, most notably the elegant observatoire hands.
The present timepiece is a masterpiece of sophisticated classicism. The dial features signature Derek Pratt design elements, including sauté piqué borders, a satin-brushed chapter ring with printed Roman numerals and a central section of hand-executed clous de Paris guilloché. The subsidiary dials at 6 and 12 o'clock are decorated with a fine basketweave pattern while the upper one, showing the moon phase indication, also discreetly displays an arc within the upper chapter with the individual serial number.
Reference 2 is powered by a Frédéric Piguet calibre 71 ébauche with a perpetual calendar module designed by Lemania. The rights to this module were acquired exclusively for Urban Jürgensen, a testimony to Baumberger’s independence of thought and technology, and a reflection of the manufacture’s desire to carve its own place in this defining era, while keeping its unique identity firmly associated with the brand.
