Among the rising generation of independent watchmakers, Sylvain Pinaud has rapidly established himself as one of the most respected and sought-after names in contemporary high watchmaking. Introduced to watchmaking at an early age while observing his father restore antique timepieces, Pinaud naturally followed the same path. After completing his training, he consolidated his expertise in the complications department at Franck Muller before specialising in the restoration of historic clocks and watches. He later joined Techniques Horlogères Appliquées (THA), the legendary workshop founded by François-Paul Journe, Vianney Halter and Denis Flageollet, where some of the most celebrated independent watchmaking projects of the modern era were conceived.
In 2022, Pinaud unveiled his own manufacture together with its inaugural wristwatch, the Origine. Produced in extremely limited numbers, the model was met with immediate acclaim, rapidly generating waiting lists stretching several years and earning Pinaud the prestigious Revelation Prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) the very same year. Entirely conceived by the watchmaker, the movement is distinguished by its striking architecture, dominated by a large 13 mm. exposed balance at 6 o'clock, while the offset indications for the hours, minutes and small seconds create a beautifully balanced composition. The reverse reveals an exceptional level of traditional hand-finishing, combining finely grained bridges with impeccably executed hand-polished bevels.
The present timepiece elevates the already rare Origine to an entirely different level. Confirmed as a unique piece by its Certificate of Authenticity, it features an exclusive black dial whose contrasting finishes enhance both depth and legibility. The hands, balance bridge, escapement bridge and pallet bridge are crafted in pink gold, while the case is executed in platinum rather than the stainless steel of the regular production model. Completing this singular specification is a specially executed grained finish to the movement, making the present watch a truly unique expression of Sylvain Pinaud's artistry.
Its significance is further heightened by the fact that Pinaud has now ceased production of the Origine in order to concentrate on his latest creation, the Tourbillon.
