Lot Essay
Few contemporary watches are as closely associated with A. Lange & Söhne as the Lange 1. Introduced on 24 October 1994 as one of the first four wristwatches presented following the revival of the historic Saxon manufacture, its unconventional asymmetrical dial and prominent outsize date immediately established a new visual identity for German fine watchmaking. Twenty-five years later, it was fittingly chosen to inaugurate the manufacture's commemorative '25th Anniversary' collection.
Unlike the nine subsequent anniversary models, each restricted to 25 examples, the Lange 1 '25th Anniversary' was produced in 250 pieces and offered exclusively through A. Lange & Söhne boutiques. Its 38.5 mm. white gold case is paired with an argenté-coloured solid silver dial, on which deep blue inscriptions, blued steel hands and blue outsize-date numerals create the distinctive aesthetic subsequently adopted throughout the anniversary series.
The commemorative character extends considerably beyond the dial. Turning the watch over reveals an engraved white gold hinged cuvette, decorated with a representation of the historic A. Lange & Söhne family residence in Glashütte, inaugurated in 1873. Beneath it, the sapphire crystal provides a view of the manually wound movement and its traditional Saxon finishing. The hand-engraved intermediate-wheel cock receives special blue-filled decoration and bears one of the defining signatures of the anniversary collection: a relief representation of the Lange outsize date displaying '25'.
