GERRIT VAN VUCHT (1610-1697), STILL LIFE WITH A HAM, SILVERWARE AND GLASSWARE ON A DRAPED TABLE, OIL ON PANEL, SIGNED, WITH THE PANEL MAKER'S MARK SVM

Gerrit van Vucht (1610-1697) is recorded as a painter and art dealer in the town of Schiedam in the Netherlands from 1658 until his death forty years later. Few still lifes by his hand are known today, but the presence of his monogram in the bottom right-hand corner of this composition allows us to include this still life in his body of work. It follows in the tradition of the Banketjes, the monochrome banquets popular amongst seventeenth century Dutch painters, of which Pieter Claesz (1597-1661) was one of the most faithful exponents. An exhibition organised in 1955 at the Rapps Konsthandel gallery in Stockholm brought this painter’s work to light and enabled works previously attributed to Pieter van Steenwijck (1615-1666) or Jacob Gillig (1636-1701) to be reattributed to Gerrit van Vucht (see B. Haak, ‘Gerrit van Vucht, een stillevenschilder te Schiedam’, Oud-Holland, 72, January 1957, pp. 115-121).

Lot Essay
