Immediately after arriving at the Ministry of Defence, Tommy SSAFA Ted left for Normandy with Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Durkin, Royal Green Jackets, for D-Day Commemorations in Normandy. He marched over Pegasus Bridge with HRH The Prince of Wales, and Major Howard who led the Glider Flight 50 years ago. After that Tommy accompanied HRH Prince Charles to Ranville Cemetary where he was given his own copy of the D-Day Commemorative New Testament.
Then it was back to Whitehall for a short posting at the Brigadiers Office. From there he went to do his Course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst where he had an arduous time but completed his training to pass out up the famous steps and become an officer in the Welsh Guards, following in the footsteps of General Sir Charles Guthrie, and Captain Richard Stanford his ADC.
He then went to Wellington Barracks, Welsh Guards Regiment headquarters, to be measured for his combat uniform by Lt Sgt Rogers the Regimental Tailor.
After that came a posting as Ted to the Chief of the General Staff General Sir Charles Guthrie, and visited Denmark, Sweden, Romania and Bulgaria travelling with The Queen's Flight. He met all the Chiefs of Staff of the Nations in NATO.
Then followed a visit to the Former Yugoslavia with Secretary of State for Defence where he met the Commander of the Bristish Forces there.
After that it was back home to spend Christmas with Captain Richard Stanford, ADC to CGS and he then went to an Executive Committe Army Board meeting with General Sir Charles Guthrie. In February he was posted to Clive Barracks to be attached to the Staff of GOC Wales and Western District.
Following that was a visit to Egypt with HRH The Prince of Wales and CGS in March 1995.
A posting with the United Nations Operations Chantress in Angola came next. He went out on a RFA Sir Galahad - a ship the Welsh Guards had been closely associated with during the Falklands Conflict. They berthed at Lobito, Angola, and Tommy was then put on parage.
On his final day in the Army, Tommy was taken to the Royal Tournament by a group of Army photographers as a special thank-you for his devoted service to the Crown.
His first public appearance after leaving the Army was at the Sunderland International Air Show, and then he immdediately left for Gothenburg to watch the athletics. He has since participated in the Great North Run with Frank Bruno.
