JOSEPH D'AGUILAR SAMUDA (1813-85)
Autograph letter signed to I. K. Brunel, 3 pages, 8vo with integral blank, Southwark Iron Works, Novr. 5th 1841.
A letter discussing a proposed visit by Brunel to his works which may relate to engineering plans for the introduction of the atmospheric system on the Kingstown and Dalkey line of the Dublin and Kingstown Railway. The line was built by the company's contractors beside an existing horse tramway, while the Samuda brothers, Jacob and Joseph, installed the pump engine and other atmospheric equipment. It opened on August 19th 1843.
"I have the two gauges fixed before & behind the piston. They are made of strong copper pipe, & the slide valve between the air-pump & the main is also fix'd -- I have therefore only to beg that you will name whatever time best suits your convenience & everything shall be then in readiness for you ... I have ordered the steam to be got up at Wormwood Scrubs on Monday to prevent the chance of disappointment in the event of that day suiting your Engagements ...."
