A rare album which documents several of the battlefields and campsites where the British were confronted by the rising Zulu power in 1879, which resulted in the Zulu War.

Including military portraits of Sir Garnet Wolseley, Lord Chelmsford who eventually retrieved disaster after the British were met by a severe reverse by the Zulus; Lieut. Coghill, Prince Imperial Louis Napoleon who had obtained leave to serve with the British and died during the war; views at Isandhlwana where the disastrous defeat of the central column of the Zululand force took place; several views of the fort and house at Roarkes Drift, 'Melville & Coghill's Grave', the camp and cemetery at Helpinakaar, two views of the spot where Louis Napoleon fell and was buried on June 1, 1879; Fort Tenedos; several views of Fort Pearson including an image of ammunition wagons leaving for the front; the 'Camp of H.M.S. Active's Brigade. Lower Tugela'; a view of the lines at 'Thrings Post'; a group portrait at 'White Rock Drift (Border guard station)'; river and waterfall views near Howick; street views in Durban; and several portraits of Zulus including the Zulu chief Cetewayo and an image titled 'Millilaga Zulu & guard' (illus.)
