An 18th-Century lacquered-brass surveying compendium,
unsigned, the engraved sector alidade with curled wheat ear motif and static and rotatable sights, bubble level, engraved protractor with sprung steel clip to secure plummet line, compass with engraved rose, the blued-steel needle with brass cap, and brass cover (glass broken), mounted on a ball-and-socket joint with side slot to permit the alidade to be used horizontally or vertically, with tripod mounting, the instrument assembled for use with butterfly head bolts, together with brass plummet, turned ivory box for screws, supplementary sight (thread broken off), and additional tripod mounting to accept bevelled tenon, in baize-lined case covered in blind stamped calf (wear to case) -- the alidade 12in. (30.5cm) long extended
