Cricket Match at Aveley Parsonage 1833
pencil drawing, inscribed, 128 x 243mm. (5 x 9½in.), in common mount with a separate sketch of two lounging spectators, 59 x 54mm. (2 1/3 x 2¼in.), framed and glazed.

Lot Essay

The main interest of this unfinished sketch lies in the informal grouping of spectators brought together by their common interest in cricket. A few benches, together with one or two more comfortable-looking chairs, are drawn up in front of a score tent; some of the top-hatted onlookers prefer to sit or stand by the tent itself; while to the extreme left of the composition, a batsman, also sporting a top hat, prepares for the next delivery.
