JOHN CORBET ANDERSON
Hillyer
hand-coloured, tinted lithograph by and after Corbet Anderson, London: published by the artist, Kingsland, and Mr. R. Dark, Lord's Ground, June 17th 1850, printed by Hullmandel and Walton, 335 x 250mm. (13¼ x 9¾in.), framed and glazed.
Literature
Down & West 3, pp. 90-91. One of many cricketers that Anderson portrayed in a top hat, William Richard Hillyer (1813-61) was actually known by the nickname of "Topper." Despite being compared to a waiter "carrying a lot of hot plates and anxious to set them down" as he shuffled up to the crease to bowl, he was a legendary bowler for the famous Kent Eleven of the 1830's and 40's, and the first player on record to achieve the all-rounder's match double of a hundred runs and ten wickets in one match.

Lot Essay

Closed tear along left-hand margin. Slightly crude colouring to the player's bow tie.
