Literature
Down & West 23, pp. 56-7; Pageant of Cricket p. 56. Thomas Beagley (1789-1858) was a cricketer of an earlier generation. He played for Hampshire between 1816 and 1828, and scored the first century (113 not out) in the Gentlemen v. Players series. Although still playing cricket as late as 1844, he is portrayed by Anderson as a spectator, supporting himself with a stick. Two cricketers converse on the field behind him. In fact, the print commemorates his benefit, the full caption describing him as "The once celebrated Hampshire cricketer. For whom 22 of 'I Zingari' and 11 of 'All England' played a Match at the Oval, Kennington, on the 14th, & 15th, July 1853: as a mark of respect to merit, coupled with unassuming manner."
