Down & West 39, pp. 110-11; Bouwman p. 63. George Parr (1826-91) reportedly disliked the way he was portrayed in a top hat, preferring a photograph of himself to Anderson's print. Nevertheless, the artist more than does justice to the commanding figure of the Nottinghamshire captain who assisted his county for about a quarter of a century, managed the All England Eleven from 1857 to 1870, and also led touring teams to Canada and the USA (1859), and Australia and New Zealand (1863-64). Parr leans nonchalantly on his bat while the cricket pavillion decked with a flag, and the country house nestling in a distant glade, give this portrait a particularly idyllic atmosphere.
