Lot Essay

A top-hatted M.C.C. member dozes while a batsman takes guard. As the same batsman awaits his first delivery, torpor begins to lift, and when the bat is raised above shoulder height his mood becomes almost excited. But hopes are dashed. The half volley is taken by the wicket-keeper without a stroke being offered, and convinced of the dullness of play the top-hatted gentleman falls back to sleep.
