Our Village Match. The Squire takes his position in the long field pen and ink drawing, signed and dated 1935, 240 x 270mm. (9½ x 10¾in.), framed and glazed. (2)
Literature
The first cartoon was published in Punch, 8th August 1934. A butler offers his master a safe catch in almost the same way that he would serve a drink, the squire looking too obviously gouty and unfit to be able to make a catch any other way. In Stampa's drawing, on the other hand, the squire is a rather poignant figure watching the game from a distant boundary where he can enjoy the shade and rest on a shooting stick.
