An Italian Burgonet Or Morion
Circa 1560
Forged from a single piece of iron with high roped comb (slight damage at the top) and undulating roped brim curving up to a point at front and rear, with an encircling row of dome-headed lining rivets above, the surface-etched and gilt throughout against a russet (originally blued) ground with ornament including Roman and Renaissance arms and armour framing on each side of the skull an oval medallion containing a figure of a winged Victory, on either side of the comb, crossed palm branches and at the front a grotesque monster's mask (minor rust and discolouration)
