The case with handle to bell top, glazed side panels, gilt-metal foliate quarter frets to the front door, on bracket feet, the Roman and Arabic white dial painted with floral spandrels, shaped calendar aperture to the centre and signature to the arch THOS. GREEN LIVERPOOL (dial retouched), the five pillar single gut fusee movement with original verge escapement, with pull quarter repeat on three bells, the backplate with repeat signature and elaborately engraved with chinoiserie pagodas -- 18¾in. (47.5cm.) high

Lot Essay

Thomas Green (fl. 1772-1805). A Liverpool clock maker, watch maker amd watch tool maker. In partnership with John Wyke, his brother-in-law, from 1772-1782.
Son of Robert Green (fl. 1767-1780) who 'makes Repeating, Horizontal & Plain Watches' (Liverpool Advertiser, 29 March 1767).
His trade card (c.1775) is illustrated in Oliver Fairclough Joseph Finney & the Clock and Watchmakers of 18th century Liverpool (MA thesis, University of Keele, copy Liverpool Record Office). A copy of a trade catalogue of his (c.1780) is also in the L.R.O. Thomas Green appears in GORES DIRECTORY (1781) at 7 Temple Street, Liverpool. A bracket clock by him (c.1780) is in the Liverpool Museums.
