A 19th-Century heliocentric planetarium, the 2¾-inch (7cm.) diameter terrestrial miniature globe signed E. Bertaux No 25 Rue Serpente PARIS made up of twelve hand coloured engraved gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees, the ecliptic ungraduated, (surface abrasions, three small holes), the geared tellurian mounted on an arm, the mechanical drive via a crank, the arm rotating around the sun ball assembly, the sun mounted on an adjustable arm within six armillary rings including the equator, the tropics and the horizon, the horizon ring stamped with the months, the assembly mounted on the cast iron circular plinth base -- 13in. (33cm.) long overall

Lot Essay

According to Dekker and van der Krogt, Emile Bertaux was working in Paris from circa 1880 to 1900. It is interesting to note that lot xx (a Maison Delamarche table globe dated 1872) bears the address "Paris Rue Serpente, 25".
