A Fine Partizan
Late 16th/early 17th Century, probably French
With elongated triangular blade with small upturned pointed basal lugs, tapering tubular socket with top moulding, at the bottom separately made vertically recurved spikes (replaced), the surfaces with panels outlined in silver dots and framing engraved running foliage and, encrusted in silver, trophies of arms, classical warriors, naked captives seated on piles of arms and, on the socket, scrolling foliage involving birds, all against a ground of punched circles, and later side-straps, wooden staff and tassel

The scenes of captives on piles of arms are reminiscent of those found on embossed French parade-armours of the late 16th century. See Laking, IV, figs. 1322-4
