in pale and dark hues, the royal pieces, bishops and knights with painted faces, the kings crowns carved with an enclosed ball, similarly the rooks, knights as horses' heads, rooks as domed turrets, all pieces with crown-shaped galleries above slender stems and circular bases, king -- 4in. (10.2cm) high, pawn -- 1 7/8in. (4.8cm) high
