Lot Essay

This incense tool vase takes the archaistic form of a Han dynasty bronze fanghu and would most probably have graced a scholar's table filled with toolss for the burning of incense, and accompanied by a burner and a box containing incense. Typical tool vases are made of bronze. Tsang and Moss discuss the use of incense burning equipment in Arts from the Scholars studio, Catalogue, nos. 229, 230.
