Longer in wheelbase than the sporting Mercedes-Benz 450SL, more compact than the 300SEL saloon, the 450SLC was Stuttgart's unique entry into what in the 1960s Detroit had identified as the 'personal car' market. It was a two-door, luxury four-seater fixed-head coupe introduced in 1972 to fit its own niche in the Mercedes range. Powered by an advanced light alloy single overhead camshaft engine that endowed the coupe with a maximum of 136 mph, the 450SLC was provided with automatic transmission, its performance potential acknowleged by a remarkably sophisticated dual circuit disc braking system and anti-dive front suspension geometry. Inside the cabin it is very 1970's with seperate recessed instruments and dark figured timber veneers. Wide doors aid access to the rear seats, the interior lightened by the long expanse of glass, uninterrupted by a centre pillar. There is power steering, electrically powered windows and an optional sunroof, as fitted to this example and a general air of solid well constructed luxury. Its performance credentials were underlined by excellent class results by carefully developed SLC coupes in gruelling dirt-road rallies in South America and on the East African Safari rally.

Powerful, solidly constructed, superbly finished, they are worthy of attention to the collector seeking a Mercedes-Benz of great character. The exterior presentation of this car is average, while the interior is very clean. The odometer shows 109,707km and is believed to be genuine.
