Lot Essay

Nesselrath comments that the present watercolour is a rare example of an entirely painted illustration, without the pen and ink outline of many of his botanical studies.
The Italian inscription describes the plants in minute detail, discussing their size, shape, colour and habitat. Cladonia pixidata is also known as 'horn fungus'.
