JAN VAN HUYSUM (1682-1749)

A Fruit-piece. November 1st 1781. Visable sheet size: 417 x 562mm. [and:] A Flower-piece. June 25th 1778, Visable sheet size: 415 x 557mm. Mezzotints by Richard Earlom, published by J.Boydell, with dedicatory arms of the Earls of Orford. (Some light creasing and surface soiling to the second work.) Framed and glazed.

A fine pair of mezzotints after originals dated 1722. "With a skill never surpassed, [van Huysum] fills his canvases with great tumbled sprays of blossom tricked out with trompe-l'oeil dewdrops, with gleaming leaves bearing insects so lifelike that one is perplexed by their immobility. This is painting in the Grand Manner, a superlative tour de force in baroque design, broad in concept yet highly finished in detail" (Blunt: The Art of Botanical Illustration, new edition. 1995. p.128).
