GRIFFITH HUGHES
The Natural History of Barbados. London: for the author, 1750. Demy 2° (404 x 258mm). 10pp. subscribers' list, slip with additional errata and subscribers pasted onto verso of final preface leaf. Folding hand-coloured engraved map of the island by Thomas Jefferys, 30 HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES, BY AND AFTER G.D.EHRET AND OTHERS. (Some browning, spotting and offsetting.) Contemporary diced russia gilt, covers with centrally-placed blocked arms of Gavinet (Olivier I.142), spine gilt in seven compartments with raised bands, the second with blue morocco lettering-piece, the others with repeat decoration of rococco foliage, shell and rocaille, g.e. (small splits in spine, spine and joints rubbed). Provenance: ANTOINE-NICOLAS GAVINET of Lyons (1724-1795, binding, two bookplates).
FIRST EDITION, LARGE-PAPER ISSUE, WITH CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOURING. "THIS BOOK IS ONE TO PLACE BESIDE CATESBY'S NATURAL HISTORY (Hunt). The work is often considered a companion to Sloane, Jamaica, and this copy has a notable provenance. Olivier writes that Gavinet (a distinguished Lyonnais chemist and writer on chemistry) left "une importante bibliothèque... qui se composait principalment d'ouvrages sur la botanique, la chimie, les mathématiques et les sciences naturelles". Interestingly, the binding appears to be English with the arms and the rococco decoration added soon afterwards in France. Great Flower Books p.60; Hunt 536; Nissen BBI 950; Sabin 33582; Wood p.393.
