The guardian sphynx-hermed mount, in the manner of Gilles-Marie Oppenord, has been popular since featuring on Louis XIV sarcophagi-commodes manufactured by André-Charles Boulle (d. 1732). Named 'Mazarine' commodes, following their display at the Institut de France's Bibliothèque Mazarine during the 19th century, their 'Mazarine' mounts were appropiately adapted to library-tables.
