A RARE CHINESE EXPORT ROSEWOOD MINIATURE FALL-FRONT DESK
late 18th century
The lower section comprising a long drawer below two short ones, supported on four bracket feet, the fall-front of a single huanghuali panel set in a frame with ice-plate edge and applied with a book rail, the interior with several small drawers and compartments arranged around the central small door flanked by two fluted Corinthian pilasters, minor repairs
22¾ in. (58 cm.) high, 24 in. (60.5 cm.) wide, 15¼ in. (39 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

This form of desk is clearly derived from an English bureau-on-stand of the George I period and was probably made for a child. For a similar miniature fall-front desk in the Collection of the Peabody Museum of Salem, see C.Crossman, op.cit., pl.123, p.224.
