Inspired by Humboldt, Berg travelled to South America and concentrated on studying the vegetation of New Granada (Colombia), publishing a folio of thirteen lithographs (Physiognomie der tropischen Vegetation Sd-America's; dargestellt durch eine Reihe von Ansichten aus der Urwäldern am Magdalenenstrome und der Anden von Neu-Granada) in 1854.
