Lot Essay

Brunias is thought to have accompanied Sir William Young, the first British Governor of Dominica, to the West Indies in 1770. He worked in the Windward Islands, in particular Dominica and St. Vincent, and exhibited Dominican subjects at the Royal Academy in 1777 and 1779. Engravings after his pictures in the collection of Sir William Young illustrated Bryan Edwards's The History, Civil and Commercial, of the British Colonies in the West Indies, London, 1807. He returned to work in the West Indies in the 1780s, remaining there until his death in Roseau, Dominica, in 1796.
