Lot Essay

Designed in the George II 'picturesque' manner, the serpentine frame with arch-centred cresting and volute-scrolled arms corresponds to a 1759 sofa pattern published by Thomas Chippendale in his The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, London, 3rd. ed., 1762, pl. XXX.
A similar serpentine sofa was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 21 April, 1995, lot 85.
