Lot Essay

These chairs display several characteristics that are associated with Irish furniture, including the pounced outline to the carving, the blind-trellis ground on the knees, the use of shells and rosettes, and the 'webbed' claw foot. However, the pierced brass claws and the spindle-tied back legs are features that do not generally appear on Irish furniture, the piercing being an incredibly rare feature (see lot 48 in this sale for a pair of chairs also with pierced claw feet).
These chairs would appear to be from the same set as a pair sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 17 May 1991, lot 51.
