Lot Essay

Patterns for multi-shelved and reed-turned display-stands, known as a 'whatnot' or 'tall music-stand' feature in the Gillows of London and Lancaster Estimate Sketch Books of the 1790s (preserved in the Westminster City Library). A related whatnot, sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 6 February 1997, lot 106, bore the brand of the Dublin cabinet-makers George and Samuel Gillington (fl.1815-1838).
