Lot Essay

Ribera's lost picture of Saint Francis of Paola, signed and dated 1640 and formerly in the collection of the Infante don Sebastian in Pau, is considered to be the prototype for this composition (see E. du Gré Trapier, Ribera, New York, 1952, p. 242).
