Of typical form with small bladed head and hammer back, the steel shaft with rounded terminal, the blade engraved and gilded with a bold floral spray on each side within a floral meander border, a similar floral spray above and below, the reverse with an arrangement of stellar flowerheads, the shaft with traces of similar decoration

Lot Essay

In form and decorative technique this axe follows those of Lutf 'Ali made in the very late Safavid period (Melikian-Chirvani, A.S.: 'The Tabarzins of Lotf 'Ali', in Elgood, R. (ed.): Islamic Arms and Armour, London, 1979, pp.116-135).
