Each with a rococo-style top section with a central flowerhead and foliage-encrusted shaft and five scroll branches with C-scroll and rockwork-encrusted nozzles, the neoclassical lower section with baluster shaft hung with swags with an open tripod base hung with swags and a canted circular base, fitted for electricity and with fringed pleated silk shade

Lot Essay

The striking early neoclassicism of the lower sections of these candelabra is inspired by French designs of around 1760, for example a pedestal by Philippe Caffieri that he supplied to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in that year. That model is illustrated in S. Eriksen, Early Neo-Classicism in France, London, 1974, fig. 204.
