Lot Essay

Messrs Morgan and Sanders' invention of 'two complete pieces of furniture...in one - as an elegant and truly comfortable armchair and a set of library steps' was praised in R. Ackermann's The Repository of Arts, July, 1811. A related chair bearing the journeyman's stamp of B. Harmer was sold anonymously, Christie's Edinburgh, May 13-15 1997, lot 459, while this chair's Grecian-scrolled and sunk-panelled feet relate to those of a suite of Harmer-stamped dining-chairs sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 11 April 1991, lot 83.
