An Early Enamelled Vase And Cover
Edo Period (Late 17th Century)
Decorated in iron red, green, yellow and black enamels between underglaze blue circumferential lines with long tailed birds among sprays of peony and chrysanthemums, the shoulder with a band of hanabishi, the neck with a geometric design, the slightly splayed foot beneath a band of lappets, a star crack with five lines but not going through base, the domed cover with knop finial similarly decorated, slight chip, with remains of green enamel

Lot Essay

The design with the two birds placed among dense foliage is reminiscent of Chinese decoration. Similar examples are illustrated Nihon Toji

, vol.20, Kakiemon pl.16, which is in the Toguri Museum, and in Eastern ceramics from the Collection of Gerald Reitlinger,
