BERTELLI, Donato (fl. 1572-1594, publisher and mapseller). Le vere imagini et descritioni delle piu nobilli citta del mondo. Venice: 1572.
Oblong 4° rebound in upright format (362 x 250mm). Etched title and 22 bird's-eye view plans (plate sizes approx. 332 x 219mm and smaller), manuscript collation tipped in at front. (Title washed and laid in, some light discolouration and very occasional spotting, old vertical folds). Modern Italian vellum. Provenance: Sir William Stirling-Maxwell Bart (bookplate).
A PREVIOUSLY UNRECORDED EDITION. A fine collection of bird's-eye views with a distinguished provenance. This issue predates any collected edition so far known. The maps comprise Venetia, Fiorenza, Genova, Messina, Milano, Mirandola, Napoli, Parma, Roma, Il vero disegno et ritratto di Siena, Fortezzat di Soppoto , Lion, Parigi, Anversa, La Imperial citta di Augusta, Franckfort, Disegno della Fortezza et citta di Gotta in Sassonia, Genevre, La gran citta del Cairo, Constantinopli, Civita Hierusalem, and Tripoli de Barbaria. Most of the views have engraved legends, but the cartouche for that on the view of Messina has been left blank. Some also bear Bertelli's imprint and are sometimes dated: these are Genoa (n.d.), Parma (1567), Rome (n.d.), Sopoto (1570), Augsburg (1569), Frankfurt (1569), Geneva (1569), Cairo (n.d), Istanbul (n.d.), and Jerusalem (n.d.). The National Maritime Museum catalogue assumes many of the maps in the 1574 edition to be after maps by Camocio. Donato Bertelli, a Venetian publisher and mapseller, reissued some of Pietro Forlani's plates and acquired many of Giovanni Francesco Camocio's. Camocio was a celebrated cartographer, whilst Forlani was mapseller and publisher who worked with Fernando Bertelli. Not in the BL; not in NMM, which has the later 1574 issue only; Tooley 242, 489, 524, 262, 155 (same title and imprint but the present copy is larger), 555; not in Frutaz; watermarks similar to Woodward 201.
