MATTEI, Innocenzo (1626-1679) and Georgio WIDMAN (engraver). Tavola esatta dell'antico Latio e nova campagna di Roma. Rome: 1666.

Engraved map of Rome and the Roman campagna, on a Royal sheet, 411 x 550mm (engraving 394 x 524mm). Title set in a decorative cartouche in the form of a wolf-skin, arms of Sigismondo Chigi, decorative scalebar and dividers, small inset key, egg-and-dart border. (Trimmed to plate mark and window-mounted, some very light discoloration and spotting.)

A very detailed and richly decorated map of the Roman Campagna. Rome is shown not as a city, but in imitation of the arms of the Chigi, surrounded by a quotation from Vergil's Aeneid reading 'Animos aequabit Olympo'. Georgio Widman was a celebrated map and lettering engraver, and worked with several publishers and engravers such as Giovanni Battista Falda (map of Rome 1675). Watermark fleur-de-lys in circle surmounted by a crown.
