Engraved bird's-eye map of Sabina on a full Royal Sheet, overall 412 x 550mm (engraving 404 x 537mm). Title set in a scrolling cartouche, engraved medallions of seven Roman kings and emperors from the Sabina region, dedication cartouche surmounted by the arms of the Cardinal Giustiniani. A VERY RARE MAP OF THE PROVINCE OF SABINA. Mauro Giubilio, a doctor from Torri in Sabina and personal physician to Clement VIII (Ippolito Aldobrandi), and a noted antiquarian of his native Sabina, wrote a history of Sabina in 1581. Maggi is famous for his series of engraved views of fountains in Rome, which were published by Rossi, and views of Florence (1600) and Rome (1625). The map shows the towns, villages and principal topographical features in bird's-eye perspective, each identified by an engraved inscription. The plate was particularly well and evenly inked for this early strike, producing a strong dark impression. The province was historically the home of the Sabini, who dwelt in the mountainous country north of the Central Appenines and East of the Tiber. This map covers almost exactly the same area, including the towns of Rieti and Narni. The ONLY TWO OTHER COPIES KNOWN are in Biblioteca Vaticana, Stamp. Barb. EEE.VII.23, and in the Gabinetto delle Stampe, Rome. Not in the British Library map room; watermark, eagle displayed in circle under five-pointed crown.
