G.A. Il vero disegnio ... di Posuolo ... et del monte nuovo nato in mare et in terra ... ali 29 setenbre 1538. [Rome: Antonio Lafreri?, third quarter of the 16th century].
Engraved view of the bay of Naples and Pozzuoli on a single Royal sheet, 295 x 432mm. The view showing a volcanic eruption and the damaged buildings and features close to the volcano, title in scrolled cartouche, galleons decorate the sea. (Window-mounted and trimmed to image, some marginal discolouration.)
A VERY FINE EARLY Neapolitan view, a dark impression of an early strike. The volcano, called in later maps Monte Cinerum, is identified here as 'Monte fatto di novo in mare'. This is an early state without the publisher's imprint, and with guidelines still visible, and 'Levante' engraved in reverse. The view shows both the ruins of Cuma and a neighbouring bridge in the sea; neither exist today. Tooley 547; watermark, Woodward 5, but citing a later issue of this map. Watermark, pilgrim in a circle.
