CAMOCIO, Giovanni Francesco (fl. 1558-72). Novo et vero dissegno della Marca di Ancona con le sui confini. Venice: 1563.

Engraved map of the Marches of Ancona on a single Royal sheet, 286 x 402mm. Title in strapwork cartouche, graticule border with cardinal points. (Trimmed to image, small marginal loss not affecting graticule border.)

A VERY RARE FIRST STATE. Tooley records only one other copy. A dark and early impression with some guidelines still visible. It was not known to Almagià, who cites the later 1565 state, printed by Ferrando Bertelli, and its archetypre, Gastaldi's Tavola Nuova della Marca d'Ancona (1548), an important early and influential map of the Marches. Later states of the map include Donato Bertelli in 1592. Camocio was one of the most important Venitian cartographers, publishers and mapsellers. The present map also predates Luchini's map of the same area (Tooley 102); Tooley 103. Watermark not legible.
