Lot Essay

Prince Albert had died on the 14th December, 1861, and Queen Victoria's inscription to her son on the front blank bears the date of the first anniversary of his death: "Let this picture of your great and beloved Father be ever before your eyes -- treasure up every Word he has spoken & try to be as like him as you can"; her remarks are signed "your ... broken-hearted Mama, Victoria, Windsor Castle, Dec: 14, 1862." Prince Arthur was born on May 1st, 1850, so was then 12 years old. The volume also contains a small watercolour design of a guards officer (uninscribed), and a home-made bookmark with inscription "To dearest Arthur from his most affectionate brother, Leopold, May 1st 1864."
