A finely engineered, exhibition-standard, late 19th-Century model twin oscillating cylinder, reversing, condensing paddle engine,
one of two built by J. Robertson, Glasgow, 1881, with brass cylinders approx 1¼in. bore x .7/8in. stroke, studded stuffing boxes, inlet and exhaust valves to each cylinder with 'lift-off' eccentric rods and slip eccentric and hand lever operated reverse, centrally mounted main stop valve and steam reservoir and individual hand operated butterfly valves in each exhaust pipe, the overmounted crankshaft runs in four main bearings, the entablature supported on eight slender tapered columns with central crank driven rear mounted inclined air pump and appropriate pipework and outboard bearings mounted on fabricated supports and two paddle wheels (bearings worn, eccentric rods loose).
