Lot Essay

Oval diptych dials are not common: Syndram, who illustrates a similar piece, notes that: "Derartig ovale Taschensonnenuhren sind relativ selten", and that Zinner does not list any oval dials by Reinman (pp. 80-81, item 13). The upper leaf of the dial has been repaired with a section of ivory fitted into the leaf, which was probably inserted during the manufacture of the dial, as the zodiac symbols on face Ib continue smoothly onto the replacement section. It seems unlikely that the technique and colours used to depict the symbols could be so nicely replicated by a later restorer, and probable that the ivory cracked during manufacture, but was repaired rather than rejected.
