A SOUTH ITALIAN POTTERY LEKANIS, the black glazed body with band of vertical lines beneath the rim, the lid decorated with a female head on either side, each wearing a sakkos, stephane and necklace, details applied in white, palmettes between the heads, wave motif around rim of lid, the knop handle with radiating black strokes -- 5¼ in. (13.3 cm.) high; 8¼ in. (21 cm.) wide across handles, second half of 4th Century B.C.
