According to Willam Daniell's journal, the Daniells visited Oudh, now Ayodhya, near Faizabad on 11 July 1789.
An oil painting of this view by Thomas Daniell, including the boat with many people aboard in the foreground, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1802 as no. 185, and is illustrated in M. Shellim, Additional Oil Paintings of India and the East by Thomas Daniell, R.A. (1749-1840) and William Daniell, R.A. (1769-1837), London, 1988, p. 15, (also illustrated in colour on the front cover).
This view of the ghats, was also drawn by William Hodges (1744-1797) and is now in the Paul Mellon Collection at the Yale Center for British Art. In his comment on his aquatint of the same view for Select Views in India, 1785, Hodges points out that in this view of the old city, the house of Nevil Ray, deputy to the father of Shuja-ud-Daula is visible.
