Tayler entered the service of the East India Company in 1829, and according to the Dictionary of National Biography 'his official career had been uneventful, though he made friends in high quarters by his skill as a portrait painter, and some enemies by a turn for cariacature'. His actions during the mutiny enforced his retirement in 1859. (6)
