Lot Essay

It is rare to find dishes of this pattern in this palette. However, the pattern exists in blue and white wares, cf. a 15th century example of a bowl illustrated by Pope, Chinese Porcelain from the Ardebil Shrine, pl. 62. For a discussion on the early Ming origins of the crossed double vajra motif in blue and white, and an illustrated Chenghua period comparison, cf. Addis, Chinese Porcelain from the Addis Collection, pp. 50-51 and pl. 21; cf. also the dish excavated from a tomb in Jingdezhen dated to 1453 illustrated by Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, vol. II, p. 531.
