THE LOG OF THE SHIP WHICH CARRIED NAPOLEON TO ST. HELENA
The log--retained by the ship's captain, George Thomas--provides a detailed daily record of the historic voyage which carried Napoleon and his entourage into exile on St. Helena. On 7 August 1815, "at 11. Gen'l Bonaparte came on board from HMS Bellerophon accompanied by Lord Huth and the following French officers, by Count Bertrand, his wife and children...Count de Montholon...Genl. Gourg[aud]; Le Count de las Cases...a surgeon [Barry Edward O'Meara]". The next day the ship departed from Portland Bay, Dorset. It reached St. Helena on 17 October, and, at noon, Bonaparte and his party disembarked on the remote island.
